Resumo

Este trabalho estabelece um diálogo entre a teologia da cultura de Paul Tillich e a música de Gilberto Gil. No primeiro capítulo são abordados os referenciais da teologia da cultura, onde busco conceitos para interpretar a música de Gil como expressão humana e religiosa, capaz de revelar o divino na cultura popular. O segundo capítulo relata a trajetória da vida e obra de Gilberto Gil e a sua possível contribuição para o diálogo teológico. No terceiro capítulo busca-se interpretar quatro canções deste cantor e compositor, a saber: "Se eu quiser falar com Deus", "Procissão", "Andar com fé" e "Guerra Santa". Nas músicas a tônica é sempre a mesma: a importância da fé na vida das pessoas, os perigos desta fé para defender interesses meramente humanos, a capacidade dos seres humanos de retornarem à fé para dar um significado último à sua existência, a religiosidade popular como expressão autêntica de vidas norteadas pela fé, a manifestação de Deus de maneiras nem sempre compreensíveis e facilmente identificáveis, a atitude do ser humano que se encontra entre a angústia e a realização de seus potenciais, entre a dúvida e a certeza da fé.

Abstract

This work establishes a dialogue between Paul Tillich's theology of culture and the music of Gilberto Gil. The first chapter deals with the theoretical frame of theology of culture. Here I look for concepts that can help to interpret Gil's music as a human and religious expression capable to disclose the divine in popular culture. The second chapter brings a biography and the work of Gilberto Gil and the importance his life might have for the theological dialogue. In the third chapter I try to interpret four songs of the composer and singer: "Seu eu quiser falar com Deus" ("When I want to talk to God"), "Procissão" ("Procession"), "Andar com fé"("Walking with faith"), and "Guerra Santa" ("Holy War"). All the songs stress the same: the importance of faith in the life of people, the danger that faith might be used for mere human interest, people ability to come back to faith in order to give an ultimate meaning to their existence, people's spirituality as an authentic expression of lives oriented by faith, God's manifestation in ways not always understandable and not easily identifiable, the human being in a position between anguish and realization of one's potentials, between doubt and the certainty of faith.
